The sisters, faithful to the charism inherited from our Founders, set as the supreme norm of life the following of Christ the Redeemer as presented in the Gospel (cf. c. 662; PC 2 a), continuing his redemptive action, radiating the merciful love of God, to proclaim the Good News to the poor and abandoned (Lk. 4:18). (C#3)
Being a Missionary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a challenge, but above all it is a commitment to live as a follower of Christ the Redeemer. This heritage was received by our Founders, but at the same time every MPS is a participant in this Gift of God. Constitution No. 3 tells us very clearly “…the supreme standard of life, the following of Christ the Redeemer as presented in the Gospel…”. In the Holy Scriptures, Luke tells us: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Lk 4:18).
“Our first and principal aspiration as MPS is to make ourselves completely receptive to the spirit and sentiments of Jesus Christ. To allow ourselves to be so deeply saturated and shaped by them that we are led to an identification in life, as perfect as possible, with his very person. This requires that the Gospel and the person of the Lord are not reduced for us to a mere ideology, nor even to a simple “theology of the mind.” We must ensure that they become for us an authentic “theology of the heart.” A theology made life, which leads us to a mystical transformation in the Lord himself. Here too we must make our own what St. Paul said: “We reflect the glory of the Lord; we are being transformed into his image with increasing splendor. Such is the power of the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor 3:18).
Studying the mystery of Redemption and reviewing the redemptive life and saving death of Jesus should fill us with joy and hope. Only love is the explanation of the life and death of Jesus, from his birth to his end. Only love can save us from our sins. Only love can open our eyes to what Jesus represents in our personal and community life.
· Mercy is proper to God, who looks deeply into the heart and knows the thoughts and intentions of every human being; therefore, mercy must be a real experience in each Missionary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, in such a way that her own life, with her personal history, is transformed, accepted and transmitted in each of her gestures, words and actions; she found God and was shown that only love gives the capacity to love and accept others.
To the poor and abandoned; that is what we, the Missionaries of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, are called to do, according to what is stated in the aforementioned Constitution.
